We are all eager to get back to the mats.  However, while many of you have been contacting me with anticipation of the end of the current quarantine, the health and safety of our members and their families are paramount to us.  So while the Ontario Government is starting to relax their recommendations related to COVID-19, we are waiting for express protocols that will keep us all safe.  Please be patient just a little while longer.  I look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces!
Take care of yourself.Take care of each other. We’ll prevail.

Happy Birthday Grandmaster! Sun, 10 May 2020 20:36:21 +0000 HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our Teacher: Grandmaster Soengkono! Best wishes to you, Sir, and many more… looking forward to the end of the quarantine to see you again!

There are only a few problems on this planet. A few nasty human beings and this corona virus crisis. Everything else here is fantastic. When the well-being of others is above your own, there is a different kind of strength, a strength that will carry you and me through these tough times together. We will emerge from this challenge stronger than ever before, and maybe…just maybe, more deeply and profoundly connected with our own humanity and our core values.I want to thank so many of you for your texts, posts, emails, cards, phone calls, generous attention and love. As you celebrate my birthday, please remember that life itself is a good enough reason to celebrate. I miss you all. Please stay safe we’ll be together in person soon.

Thank You Mon, 30 Dec 2019 22:16:46 +0000

Grandmaster Soengkono would like to extend his sincere gratitude to all the students that gave their valuable time to help move so much of the Dojo to our new location. While we will STILL BE OPERATING OUT OF OUR VICTORIAVILLE LOCATION until final renovations on our Court Street location are complete, the work done this weekend will make our final move smooth and easy. To all of you, students, family and friends, who gave their time: thank you.

In particular, Lavan Thirukeetheesawaranathan, who flew in from Saskatoon to keep the move organized and strategic… we could not have accomplished what we did without you.

We did our best to keep track of so many people who came out to help – we were overwhelmed by the heart, hard work and hours put in, we can’t say how much we appreciate what they all did. If we missed your name, we apologize. We were unprepared for the sheer number of people who arrived to help us at both locations.

Thank you to:

MP honours martial arts grandmaster
Martial arts Grandmaster Soengkono was honoured December 15th by Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Patty Hajdu, the federal minister of health, for his contribution to the social fabric of our community at the Annual Soengkono Martial Arts Holiday Party held at the Da Vinci Center.

The MP presented a certificate in front of more than 200 students, family and friends of the school. Hajdu, whose sons were students of Grandmaster Soengkono years ago, lauded the Grandmaster for his long-time service to “imbuing wellness” into the community of Thunder Bay.

“How do we stay well… in a world where things are unpredictable… and the pressures of social media, Instagram [and] Facebook [are to be] perfect?” challenged Hajdu, adding that staying well is “… something that Master Song has given Thunder Bay for well over 30 years, and we’re so lucky to have him here.”

Coun. Aldo Ruberto, who is taking Pentjak Silat classes under Grandmaster Soengkono and who was also in attendance, echoed her statements. He assured all of the school’s parents that their “children who are taking these classes are getting the best of the best… and not just in the physical part, but the mental part as well.”

He went on to thank Grandmaster Soengkono, stating “You make our city a better place by producing the people you produce.”
